The much-awaited Riyadh Metro finally opened to the public earlier this month. It has been making waves and has already announced expansion plans.
The Riyadh Metro, which spans 176km across six routes and features 85 stations, has announced the expansion of a seventh line, which is set to be a game-changer. The new route will connect Riyadh to some of the most exciting developments in the region. These include Qiddiya Entertainment City and Diriyah, both of which will play significant roles in the Kingdom’s growth.
The new seventh line will stretch across 65 kilometres, with 19 stations. Of these, 14 will be underground, and five will be elevated. It will connect major landmarks like Qiddiya, King Abdullah International Gardens, King Salman Park, New Murabba, Misk City, and Diriyah Gate, making travelling around the capital more convenient.
With the addition of this seventh line, the Riyadh Metro network is set to double in size. This expansion will take the total length of the metro to over 240km and over 100 stations. This means that every neighbourhood in Riyadh will be seamlessly connected, making commuting quicker, more convenient, and more sustainable.
One of the most exciting things about this expansion is its timing. As Saudi Arabia is preparing to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, the metro’s new routes will offer quick and efficient access to key stadiums and entertainment hubs. The New Murabba Stadium, ROSHN Stadium, Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Stadium and King Salman Stadium will all be easily reachable via the metro. The King Salman Stadium is set to host the final match in 2034, attracting not only locals but global visitors as well.
Riyadh Metro is the largest metro system in the world to be built in a single phase. Currently, it operates the Blue Line, Yellow Line, Violet Line, Red Line, Green Line and Orange Line connecting the capital.
