Sotheby’s has made its way from the United Kingdom to Saudi Arabia. Now, it will be holding its first auction in Saudi Arabia, which takes place on 8 February 2025 in Diriyah, Riyadh. Origins showcases the company’s global offerings for new and seasoned collectors.
Origins will be a two-part auction spanning the sale of fine art by Saudi Arabian artists, and sale of international names in art history. The items include cars, handbags, jewellery, sports memorabilia and watches. Charles F. Stewart, Sotheby’s Chief Executive Officer, explained: “This is a very dynamic time for culture in Saudi Arabia. Sotheby’s has been active in the Kingdom for a number of years now and we’ve witnessed the blossoming of the cultural scene with great interest. In committing to a physical presence in Riyadh, we’re supporting the enrichment of the artistic landscape of the country, which will empower the large youth demographic of Saudi.”
Jerry Inzerillo, CEO of the Diriyah Company Group, added: “We are proud and honoured to be the venue to host Sotheby’s first-ever international art auction in Saudi Arabia. I can think of no more appropriate venue than a place that celebrates three centuries of cultural excellence to welcome such a prestigious company to the Kingdom.”
Sotheby’s has built a strong relationship with Saudi Arabia. In 2013, it hosted its first exhibition in the Kingdom. In 2017, it held its first charity auction in the country. Plus, it has participated in the Riyadh International Book Fair.
